Abstract

Indian lac insect, Kerria Iacca (Kern) is a  minor pest on some horticultural plant species  such as Zizyphus Mauritiana Larnk. (ber), Annona  squamosa Linn. (custard apple), Ficus carica  Linn. (anjeer) (Roonwal, I962) and Wris vinifera  Linn. (grape) (Mehra, I955). The insect also  thrives on a number of forest plants. It is being  cultured on a number of plant species of minor  economic importance for the production of  shellac, lac wax and lac dye. These being  non-toxic natural products, have tremendous  export potential.  A number of insectsvare closely associated  with lac insects, of which three are major  predators viz.; Eublemma amabilir Moore  (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae), Pseudahypatopa  pulvera Merk. (Lepidoptera : Blastobasidae),  Chrysapa sp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). There  are also eight parasitoids of minor importance.
